The superego is driven by values and morals of society, learned in childhood, from the parents and society. It is the last to develop because it requires more of an understanding of other people and a sense higher than the self. The superego controls our moral conscience. The superego (Latin for over I) is what imposes moral values of society or religion on our decisions. The ego must mediate between the basic demands created by the libido as well as the idealistic standards imposed by the superego. It has the common goal of maximizing pleasure and has no concept of right or wrong, it merely goes about its function with a more strategic approach. SUPER-EGO: The super-ego is the faculty that seeks to police what it deems unacceptable desires it represents all moral restrictions and is the advocate. The superego is the part of the personality that involves the ideals and morals internalized from parents, authority figures, and society. It is often in charge of decisions and is more rational, in order to control the irrational and chaotic id. The ego (Latin for l) manages the id and makes it compatible with real life. The id also does not change throughout life, it remains infantile and animalistic. It results essentially from the internalization of parental authority. It is a composite of all the voices you heard as a child about what was and was not okay to do. Early in life the superego is formed by the infants identification with parents and. It is that part of the personality concerned with social standards, ethics, and conscience. The newborn baby only has an id - the other parts of the personality develop later. The superego is one of the three agencies making up the psychic apparatus in Freuds second topography, the structural theory (1923b).
